Making the transition to Spring

Yes.  It’s been FREEZING cold and I know the warm breezes of New England spring seem oh so far away.  They will come, in time, but in the meanwhile, let’s focus on a cozy fireplace, shall we?

Holiday Fireplace

You may have seen this custom design we did for the holidays.  My favorite of the season and a custom Pam creation.  Well, the client asked us to refresh their mantel as a transitional piece – winter into spring.

Winter Mantle

Take away the holiday greens, add in another cylinder with rustic coiled vines, sparkling pinecones, more dogwood branches, and a bird or two.  Pop in a punch of color with pillar candles to match the room’s decor and “ta-da!” you have a winter mantle display that hints of the spring to come.  Best of all, we were able to reuse most of the original design pieces.

Mary & Brian’s Coastal New Hampshire Wedding

Coastal Wedding Flowers Photography by KLC

Happy Monday!  Here’s some coastal beauty to start your week off right…

Mary and Brian love the New England Coast and vacation in Southern Maine every summer.  One of their favorite spots to visit while they are in the area is downtown Portsmouth (a couple after my own heart).  As they planned their intimate destination wedding it seemed only fitting to celebrate in the town they love and at the very restaurant they frequent the most – The Portsmouth Brewery

The couple came to us through a series of mouse clicks.  When researching local vendors, Mary found the link to the NH Made website on the Brewery’s page, and from there they linked to our site.  The links don’t end there!  Once on our blog, Mary found our link to Laurel Events, and just like that we got yet another opportunity to work with one of our favorite local planners.  How’s that for social networking?

The ceremony was held at St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea in Rye, a charming stone chapel just a short walk from the rocky coastline.  We didn’t need to add much to the already beautiful space.  Just a couple arrangements on the alter and small posies on the pews.  There is something magical about old stone chapels.  Maybe it’s the splashes of colors thrown about by the stained glass or the sense of history permeating from the solid walls…  We are very much looking forward to designing for another St. Andrew’s wedding this coming summer.

A cozy reception of cocktails and dinner followed the Brewery.  You may have noticed the “Big Table” room in the back, just past the giant vats of brewing beer.  Mary was a bit overwhelmed by the floral aspects of her wedding and wasn’t so sure how to articulate exactly what she was looking for.  She came to our meeting prepared with various color option, design ideas, bouquets, etc, but without a strong feeling about anything.  Her absolute favorite wedding blog is http://greenweddingshoes.com/, and she loves anything vintage, rustic, or with a touch of modern influence.  Ok, no problem.  We narrowed it all down and came up with a table design that was one of my favorites of the year.

Jars of varied shapes and sizes ran down the length of the table over a burlap runner.  We blocked colors and types of flowers together to create a cleaner, more modern take on the vintage look Mary is so fond of.  A few of the vases were wrapped with raffia for the added texture.  Another fun fact: the number of vases matched the number of guest, so everyone got to take one home as a gift!

Luckily these two love birds left plenty of time for photos and Photography by KLC captured some amazing moments and details.  Check them out here, and even more on her blog.

And to top off a great wedding, kind words from the Bride herself:

“Kristin and Pam at Ideas in Bloom were delightful to work with!!! They have amazing creative judgment and were able to figure out exactly what I loved when I was unable to articulate it. They ask all the right questions, have a wide range of style, and are most importantly dedicated to making sure the couple are happy. We and our guests were truly in love with their work. Thank you Ideas in Bloom!!”

Wedding Trend Watch 2013

2013

This morning I was reading a post on one of my favorite flower blogs, Flirty Fleurs, about wedding trends for the coming year.  They had polled their Facebook fans and came up with the following list of blooms most apt to be popular this season:

  • Succulents
  • Garden Roses
  • Roses
  • Peonies
  • Dahlias
  • Hydrangea
  • Orchids
  • Ranunculus
  • Anemones
  • Tulips

No real surprises there.  Seems these flowers have been longstanding favorites for a few years now.  Glad to see my personal favorite, the peony, remains a frontrunner for many!

They also compiled themes and decor we are likely to see a lot more of in the coming months.  I think the only thing missing that we have had requests for is the incorporation of live plants in centerpieces or decor.

  • Vintage shabby chic
  • Wooden boxes
  • Blush tones, taupes, creams and whites
  • Mercury glass
  • Burlap and twine
  • Garden style, lots of foliages & vines
  • Lace
  • Lanterns
  • Gold – linens, flowers, trays, vessels
  • Long, layered, flowing vintage antique ribbons
  • Compote style vessels

see the full report here

Anything this poll missed?  Do you have a favorite flower or decor theme that’s missing from the list?  We’d love to hear your ideas!

Welcome 2013!

Happy New Year!  We are back after a wonderful holiday.  It’s been a very busy year and we are looking forward to a few months of “down time” when we can meet with newly engaged couples and dream up beautiful and unique decor for their celebrations.  Did you get an extra special gift under the tree or know someone who is sporting a bit more sparkle these days?  Contact us to schedule a complimentary consultation!

2012 was a banner year for us with more weddings than ever before, a slew of new venues to add to the portfolio, and the most wonderful couples.  We launched the new website, have been featured on Style Me Pretty, began holding DIY workshops, and have added to our unique event rental archive.  Not to mention the arrival of our little shop assistant, Jo!

The year ahead is shaping up to be just as exciting as the last.  We are booking up for the coming wedding season and will be offering more DYI workshops to help brighten your winter months.  Stay tuned for those details in the next few weeks.

Be sure to keep a look out for new posts here, more gorgeous photos, and upcoming workshop information.  For now, here’s a look back at 2012 in photos…
